Officer Cooper Dawson, 27, initiated a traffic stop in the 3500 block of Pickett Street at approximately 7:40 p.m. Monday evening. During the encounter, Christian Robert Sparger fled on foot, prompting Officer Dawson to pursue him.
According to police reports, Christian Robert Sparger ambushed Officer Cooper Dawson during the chase, shooting him multiple times. Despite suffering severe injuries, Officer Cooper Dawson demonstrated incredible bravery, returning fire and injuring Christian Robert Sparger, Herald Banner reported.
Officer Dawson was initially taken to Hunt Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to Medical City Plano. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Christian Robert Sparger’s Criminal History
Christian Robert Sparger has a lengthy criminal history in Hunt and Denton Counties, including charges of violence and drug-related offenses, Herald Banner reported. Christian Robert Sparger prior arrests include:
June 2017: Arrested in Greenville for marijuana possession and public intoxication.
March 2018: Arrested by the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office for marijuana possession.
March 2018: Arrested again in Greenville for a drug charge and failure to identify as a fugitive with intent to provide false information.
2023: Arrested by Denton Police for assault on a family member impeding breathing, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and continuous assault on a family member. These charges were merged, resulting in an eight-year probation sentence in October 2023.
Christian Robert Sparger’s probation violations, which include two counts of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and continuous violence against a family member, remain under scrutiny following the fatal shooting of Officer Cooper Dawson.
