UnitedHealthcare CEO Shooting: Suspect Traveled from Atlanta, Stayed at NYC Hostel, and Was Captured on Key Footage
New York City – Law enforcement continues its pursuit of the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, revealing critical details about his movements before and after the brazen attack. The suspect, believed to have traveled from Atlanta, stayed at a New York City hostel under a false identity and was captured on surveillance cameras without his mask, thanks to an interaction with a front desk clerk.
Authorities have identified a suspect and are narrowing their search, New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated at a Harlem event, according to the New York Post as reported by Reuters. Mayor Adams noted, “The net is tightening,” but did not disclose the suspect’s name.
Mayor Adams stated “We don’t want to release that now,” Adams said. “If we do, we are basically giving a tip to the person we are seeking and we do not want to give him an upper hand at all. Let him continue to believe he can hide behind the mask. We revealed his face. We’re going to reveal who he is and we’re going to bring him to justice.”
The Suspect’s Hostel Stay and Key Interaction
New developments include photos released by the NYPD showing the suspect unmasked during his stay at the HI New York City Hostel on Amsterdam Avenue. A law enforcement source confirmed the image came from an interaction with a front desk clerk. When the suspect flirted with her, she asked him to lower his mask so she could see his smile. He complied, briefly pulling his mask down, which allowed surveillance cameras to capture his face clearly, as reported by ABC7 NY.

This crucial image is being widely circulated by investigators, who are optimistic that someone will recognize him.
The suspect stayed in a shared fourth-floor room with two other men and checked into the hostel using a New Jersey driver’s license that investigators believe is fraudulent. Detectives ran the name on the license and confirmed it does not match any known records or photos of the suspect, ABC7 NY reported.
The Suspect’s Movements Around the City
Surveillance footage places the suspect at various locations prior to the attack. New York City Police reviewed video showing him exiting the subway at the 57th Street station early Wednesday morning, just blocks from the crime scene. He was also seen outside the hostel around 5 a.m. holding what appeared to be an e-bike battery, suggesting he had prepped his escape plan well in advance, sources confirm.

The suspect appears to be proficient gunsman who used a silencer
Brian Thompson, 50, was gunned down outside the New York Hilton on Sixth Avenue near 54th Street around 6:45 a.m. on December 4, 2024. The suspect was captured on surveillance footage loitering near the hotel for at least five minutes before ambushing Brian Thompson. Witnesses reported that the attacker fired several shots at point-blank range, including hits to Brian Thompson’s back and calf.
Although the suspect’s weapon malfunctioned mid-attack, he swiftly cleared the jam and continued firing before fleeing the scene through Ziegfeld Alley on a pre-positioned e-bike. Authorities have been actively searching the area but have yet to recover the suspect’s bike or weapon.
A shell casing found at the scene had the word “depose” written on it, while “delay” was inscribed on a live round ejected when the suspect cleared the jam. "It does seem that he's proficient in the use of firearms, as he was able to clear the malfunctions quickly," said NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny during a news conference on Wednesday.

Experts also noted that the gun appeared to be equipped with a silencer, which can cause malfunctions unless modified correctly. Investigators are considering whether the markings on the shells could indicate a motive, with some speculating that they may be linked to a phrase commonly used in the insurance industry: "delay, deny, defend," CNN reported.

Weapon Details
Investigators believe the suspect used a rare B&T Station Six, a pistol known for its near-silent operation. This unique weapon requires manual cycling of ammunition, consistent with the malfunction observed during the shooting. Authorities are now tracing the purchase history of this firearm, focusing on leads from a Connecticut gun shop, ABC7 NY reported.
Suspect Description and Ongoing Search
The suspect is described as a tall, thin man, approximately 6’1”, wearing a black jacket, hat, ski mask, and backpack during the attack. New images of the suspect’s unmasked face have become critical to the investigation, and a $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest.
The FBI has joined the New York Police Department in the search for the suspect. The agency is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the gunman’s arrest and conviction, according to its New York City field office, as reported by The Hill.

Brian Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, 51, confirmed during an interview with NBC News that her husband had mentioned receiving threats.

“He said there had been some threats,” Paulette Thompson shared. “I don’t have all the details, but it seemed like there were people making threats against him. It might have been tied to a lack of coverage or something along those lines—I really don’t know.”
Sources also revealed that Brian and Paulette Thompson had been living in separate homes in Maple Grove, Minnesota, for years, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Hours after Thompson’s murder, bomb threats were made against both homes in their quiet suburban Minneapolis neighborhood. Maple Grove police responded and investigated but found no devices or suspicious items.
“The case is considered an active investigation, while the incident appears to be a hoax,” the Maple Grove Police Department stated.
